Armed vs Unarmed: Which Firearms Course Is Right for You?

Published April 5, 2026 · USS Academy

One of the most common questions we hear from new students at USS Academy is some version of the same thing: "Which class should I take?" It is a fair question. When you look at a training catalog that includes everything from basic safety courses to advanced tactical programs, it can be overwhelming to figure out where you fit in. The answer depends entirely on your goals, your experience level, and what you plan to do with the skills you learn.

This guide breaks down the key differences between armed and unarmed firearms courses, explains the various types of training available in Orlando and Central Florida, and helps you identify the course that aligns with where you are today and where you want to be tomorrow.

Understanding the Core Categories of Firearms Training

Before we compare specific courses, it helps to understand the broad categories that most firearms training falls into. Each category serves a different purpose, and many students progress through all of them over time.

Safety and Fundamentals Courses

These are the starting point for anyone new to firearms. A fundamentals course teaches you the four rules of firearm safety, how to handle a handgun, how to load and unload, and how to conduct yourself safely on a range. No prior experience is required. No firearm ownership is required. This is where every responsible gun owner should begin.

At USS Academy, our Foundations Class is the entry point for all students. It covers firearm safety, handling mechanics, malfunction clearing, range etiquette, and an overview of Florida firearms law. This class does not require you to fire a qualifying course — it is education and basic live-fire experience.

Concealed Weapon Permit (CWP) Courses

CWP courses are specifically designed to fulfill the training requirement for a Florida Concealed Weapon License. These courses include classroom instruction on safety and legal topics plus a qualifying course of fire where you must demonstrate competency with a firearm. The qualifying exam is the key difference between a safety class and a CWP class — you must pass the shooting test to earn your certificate.

Self-Defense and Defensive Shooting Courses

These courses go beyond basic safety and CWP training to teach you how to use a firearm in a real-world self-defense scenario. Topics include drawing from concealment, shooting from unconventional positions, engaging moving targets, low-light shooting, and decision-making under stress. These are the courses that bridge the gap between knowing how to shoot and knowing how to defend yourself.

Tactical and Advanced Courses

Tactical courses are designed for students who want to train at a higher level. This includes advanced marksmanship, multi-target engagement, room clearing concepts, force-on-force training, rifle and carbine courses, and night vision operations. These classes are for experienced shooters who want to sharpen their skills to a professional standard.

Professional Development and Instructor Courses

For students who want to make firearms training their career, instructor certification programs teach you how to teach others. These courses cover pedagogy, curriculum design, range management, and the certifications needed to operate as a licensed firearms instructor in Florida.

Armed Courses: What They Include and Who They Are For

An armed firearms course is any course that involves live-fire range time with real ammunition. This is the majority of courses offered at USS Academy and most professional training academies. Armed courses require you to physically fire a handgun, rifle, or shotgun under instructor supervision.

Unarmed Courses: What They Include and Who They Are For

An unarmed firearms course focuses on education, safety, and handling without live-fire range time. These courses are classroom-based and teach you the knowledge you need to be a responsible, informed gun owner without requiring you to shoot.

Self-Defense vs Tactical: Understanding the Difference

Many students confuse self-defense courses with tactical courses. While they share some overlap, they serve very different purposes.

Self-Defense Courses

Self-defense courses teach you how to protect yourself and your family in a real-world threat situation. The focus is on civilian scenarios — a home invasion, a carjacking, an attack in a parking lot. Training emphasizes quick decision-making, drawing under stress, shooting accurately at close range, and understanding when the use of deadly force is legally justified.

Self-defense courses are appropriate for anyone who carries a firearm for personal protection. You do not need to be an expert marksman. You need to be able to deploy your weapon effectively in a high-stress, close-quarters situation where your life or the life of a loved one is at risk.

Tactical Courses

Tactical courses borrow from military and law enforcement training methodologies and apply them to advanced civilian training. These courses involve higher round counts, faster engagement times, multi-target scenarios, movement while shooting, communication under fire, and force-on-force exercises with simulated ammunition.

Tactical courses are for experienced shooters who have already mastered the fundamentals and want to train at an elite level. They are physically demanding, mentally challenging, and designed to push you beyond your comfort zone. If you have never taken a basic firearms course, a tactical class is not where you should start.

How to Choose the Right Course for You

Here is a simple framework to help you decide which course to take based on your current situation.

If you have never touched a firearm before

Start with a Foundations or Safety Class. Get comfortable with the mechanics, learn the safety rules, and fire a few rounds under instructor supervision. You can always add the CWP qualifying exam the same day or come back later.

If you want your Florida Concealed Weapon License

Take the CWP course with qualifying exam. This is the most popular course at USS Academy and includes both the classroom instruction and the live-fire qualifying test. You leave with the certificate you need to submit your state application.

If you already have your CWP and want to get better

Move into intermediate marksmanship or defensive shooting. These courses build on the fundamentals and teach you how to apply your skills in more realistic scenarios. This is where casual gun owners become genuinely proficient.

If you carry daily and want real-world readiness

Take a self-defense or defensive shooting course. These classes simulate real-world threats and train you to respond effectively under pressure. Drawing from concealment, shooting at close range, and making split-second decisions — this is where training saves lives.

If you are an experienced shooter looking for a challenge

Enroll in tactical, competitive, or advanced courses. USS Academy offers programs that include advanced handgun work, rifle and carbine courses, night vision operations, and instructor certification for students who want to train at the highest level.

The USS Academy Course Progression

We designed our curriculum as a clear progression so students always know what comes next. Here is the path most students follow:

  1. Tier 1 — Beginner and Core Safety ($99-$179): Foundations class, CWP qualifying exam, and certificate upgrades. This is where everyone starts.
  2. Tier 2 — Skill Building and Development ($279): Intermediate courses that build marksmanship and introduce defensive concepts.
  3. Tier 3 — Tactical, Specialized, and Professional ($349): Advanced courses including Black Box defensive training, rifle and carbine courses, and specialized programs.
  4. Tier 4 — Precision and Science ($399): Science of the Shot, Zero to Accurate — courses that focus on the mechanics and physics of precision shooting.
  5. Tier 5 — Night Vision Elite Tactical ($499): Night vision operations for students who want to train with advanced technology.
  6. Tier 6 — Professional Development ($799+): Instructor certification for students who want to teach firearms professionally.

You do not have to follow this path exactly, but it gives you a clear roadmap so you always know what level you are at and what comes next. Our instructors are happy to recommend the right course for your current skill level and goals.

Why It Matters Where You Train

Not all firearms courses are created equal. A one-hour certificate mill that gets you a piece of paper is not the same as a structured training program taught by certified professionals. The course you choose and the instructor who teaches it can mean the difference between being a liability with a firearm and being genuinely prepared to use one responsibly.

At USS Academy, our instructors bring U.S. Marine Corps service, NRA and USCCA certifications, and the Florida K License for security training. We have refined our programs over 27+ years and trained over 29,000 students. We are not a pop-up class in a parking lot. We are a professional training academy with a reputation built on decades of proven results.
