Walking into your first firearms training class can feel intimidating. Maybe you have never held a gun before. Maybe you grew up around firearms but never received formal instruction. Maybe a friend or family member encouraged you to get trained, and now you are wondering what you actually signed up for. Whatever brought you here, the fact that you are seeking professional training puts you ahead of most people.
At USS Academy, we have trained over 29,000 students in the past 27+ years, and a significant number of them walked through our doors as complete beginners. We designed our program specifically to take someone with zero experience and build them into a safe, confident, and legally informed firearms handler. This guide will walk you through every detail of what your first class looks like so there are no surprises on training day.
Preparation starts before you arrive at the training facility. Knowing what to expect, what to wear, and what to bring eliminates the anxiety that comes with the unknown. Here is your complete checklist.
Dress for comfort and safety. You will be spending time in both a classroom setting and on a live-fire range, so plan accordingly.
Plan to arrive 10 to 15 minutes early. This gives you time to check in, complete any registration paperwork, and get settled before class begins. When you walk in, you will be greeted by staff who will confirm your registration, collect any remaining fees, and direct you to the classroom.
At USS Academy, we make a point to welcome every student personally. Our instructors introduce themselves and create a comfortable environment from the moment you walk in. You will notice other students in the room who are in the exact same position as you. Many of them are first-timers too. There is no judgment, no ego, and no expectation that you should already know anything about firearms. That is why you are here.
Every USS Academy class begins in the classroom. This is where we build the knowledge foundation that makes everything on the range safe and effective. Our classroom session typically runs from 9AM to 11AM and covers the following topics in detail.
These four rules are the bedrock of everything we teach. Every experienced shooter in the world follows these rules, and every accident you have ever heard about involved someone violating at least one of them.
Our instructors do not just recite these rules. They explain them in real-world context so you understand why each one exists and what happens when they are ignored. This is the most important lesson you will ever learn about firearms, and we take it seriously.
Next, you will learn the physical fundamentals of handling a handgun. This includes:
Our instructors demonstrate each of these skills with training firearms before anyone touches a live weapon. You will have the opportunity to practice each technique with hands-on guidance. No one moves on until they are comfortable and confident with the basics.
Before stepping onto the range, you need to understand how a firing line operates. Our instructors cover standard range commands that you will hear during the live-fire portion:
Understanding these commands before you get to the range means you will not be confused or startled when you hear them for the first time with ear protection on.
This is where USS Academy classes go beyond what most training providers offer. Our instructors provide an overview of Florida Statute 790 (weapons and firearms) and Florida Statute 776 (justifiable use of force). You will learn the legal framework that governs firearm ownership, carrying, and self-defense in the state of Florida.
This is not legal advice — our instructors are not attorneys. But understanding the basics of when you can and cannot legally use a firearm, what constitutes justifiable use of force, and where you are prohibited from carrying is essential knowledge that every gun owner needs.
After the classroom portion, it is time to apply what you learned. This is the moment most beginners are both excited and nervous about. Here is exactly what happens.
Your instructor will walk you to the range area and position you at your lane. Before you fire a single round, the instructor will go through a final safety check with you. They will confirm your eye and ear protection is properly in place, review the range commands one more time, and verify that you remember the four rules of firearm safety.
For your first live-fire experience at USS Academy, you will typically fire 3 to 5 rounds. This is not your qualifying exam. This is your practice round — your first opportunity to feel the recoil, hear the sound, and experience what it is like to fire a live weapon in a controlled environment.
Your instructor will be standing right beside you the entire time. They will coach your grip, your stance, your sight alignment, and your trigger press in real time. If you are flinching, they will help you work through it. If your grip is too loose, they will adjust it. If you are holding your breath, they will remind you to breathe.
The most common reaction from first-time shooters? A huge smile. The nervousness disappears almost immediately once you realize you are in a safe, controlled environment with a professional instructor guiding every step. Many students tell us their only regret is not doing it sooner.
Once you complete the classroom instruction and your first live-fire rotation, you have several options depending on your goals.
If your goal is to obtain your Florida Concealed Weapon License, you can take the qualifying course of fire the same day. The exam runs from 11:30AM to 1:30PM and is a paid upgrade. You will fire approximately three volleys and must meet the passing score on your instructor's matrix. Pass, and you receive your Certificate of Completion — the document you need to apply for your state permit.
Some students prefer to take the foundations class, go home, process what they learned, and return for the qualifying exam at a later date. That is perfectly fine. There is no pressure to rush. Your training should happen at a pace that is comfortable for you.
The foundations class is just the beginning. USS Academy offers a full progression of courses from beginner through advanced tactical training. Many of our students start with the CWP class and come back for intermediate marksmanship, defensive shooting, or even our competitive shooting programs. The skills you build in your first class create the foundation for everything that follows.
No. We have rental firearms available. Many first-time students come in without owning a firearm. In fact, training before you buy is smart — it helps you understand what type of firearm fits your hand, your strength, and your intended purpose before you spend money.
Absolutely not. Our classes are designed for beginners. You will be surrounded by other students who are in the same position. Our instructors have taught thousands of first-timers and they are patient, encouraging, and skilled at making people feel comfortable.
Yes, firearms are loud. That is why we require ear protection. With proper ear protection in place, the sound is manageable. You will feel the concussion more than you hear it. Most students adapt within the first few rounds.
A healthy respect for firearms is a good thing. We would rather have a student who is cautious than one who is overconfident. Fear is natural and our instructors are trained to help you work through it at your own pace. No one will force you to do anything you are not ready for.
Yes. Many students bring a spouse, partner, friend, or family member. Training together is a great experience and it means you both leave with the same foundation of knowledge and safety skills.
There are many options for firearms training in Orlando and Central Florida. Some offer quick certificate mills that get you in and out in an hour. That might check a box, but it will not prepare you to safely handle a firearm in the real world.
At USS Academy, our instructors bring backgrounds that include U.S. Marine Corps service, NRA instructor certifications, USCCA instructor certifications, and the Florida K License for security training. We have spent 27+ years refining our curriculum specifically for students who want more than the bare minimum.
