For Your First Firearm, a Real Foundation
Becoming a gun owner for the first time is a significant decision, and the moments after purchase are where good habits get built or bad habits get started. The First-Time Gun Owner Class at USS Academy is built for exactly this moment. Over 27 years and 29,000+ students, we have identified the specific gaps new owners have when they walk into their first class — and we have structured this class to close every one of them before you handle your firearm alone.
The class is classroom-based with an optional live-fire range session. It covers the four universal rules of firearm safety, safe handling in the home, safe storage, transportation, the legal framework that applies to firearm ownership in Florida, and a structured walk-through of what to expect on your first range trip. By the end of the class, you have a complete mental model of safe ownership and a clear roadmap for building your skill from here.
What the Class Covers
The class is structured around the questions every first-time owner asks — and many they do not realize they should be asking.
The Four Universal Rules
Treat every firearm as loaded. Never point at anything you do not intend to destroy. Keep finger off trigger until ready to fire. Know your target and what is beyond it.
At-Home Handling
Safe administrative handling in the home, clearing and verifying empty, handling around family members, loaded vs unloaded state management.
Safe Storage
Gun safes, trigger locks, cable locks, quick-access safes, ammunition storage, separate-storage principles, child-access prevention.
Transportation
Vehicle transport, secure carry from home to range, Florida statutes on transport, interstate considerations.
Florida Legal Framework
Firearm ownership law overview (Statute 790), self-defense framework (Statute 776), Florida-specific considerations.
Range Preparation
How to pick your first range, what to bring, what to expect, how to approach the line, live-fire etiquette and courtesy.
Built for First-Time Owners
The First-Time Gun Owner Class is designed for adults who have recently purchased their first firearm or are about to. Students include first-time purchasers, household partners of new owners who want the same foundation, parents of adult children who have taken up firearm ownership, and adults who own a firearm inherited from a family member and have never had formal instruction.
We welcome couples, families, and friend groups. Many first-time owners enroll with a spouse so both people in the household are aligned on handling, storage, and safety. Group enrollment at 6 or more students qualifies for group pricing.
Trained Right From the Start
The first class you take shapes the habits you carry for the rest of your life as an owner. Here is why thousands of Florida owners have chosen USS Academy for that first class.
- Certified instructors. LE Firearms Instructor, USMC, NRA, USCCA, Florida K License credentials.
- Patient instruction. First-time nervousness is expected, respected, and addressed without rushing or correction that embarrasses.
- Optional live-fire. Add a range session to the class for a supervised first live-fire experience.
- Rental firearms. Not comfortable transporting the firearm you just bought? We provide a rental for class.
- Couples and families welcome. Many first-time owners attend with a spouse or family member.
- A clear next step. We outline what class to take next — CWP, defensive shooting, or general skill-building — based on your goals.

Frequently Asked Questions
I just bought my first gun. What do I do first?
Take a class. Handling a firearm safely is a trained skill, not an intuition. USS Academy's First-Time Gun Owner Class teaches exactly what you need to know before you practice alone.
Do I need to bring the gun I bought?
Bring it if you are comfortable transporting it safely. If you are not, rental firearms are available during class. We will teach safe transport for future classes.
Is this a concealed carry class?
No. This class is focused on the foundations every new owner needs. If you want a concealed carry permit, take this class first, then enroll in our CWP Class Orlando.
How is this different from the Gun Safety Class?
There is overlap. The First-Time Gun Owner Class is specifically framed for new owners just after purchase, with emphasis on storage at home, family considerations, and first-range-session preparation. The Gun Safety Class covers similar material from a broader household-safety framing.
How long is the class?
3 to 4 hours. Optional live-fire range session adds another 1 to 2 hours.
My spouse just bought a gun. Can we take this class together?
Yes, and many couples do. The class is designed so one or both people in a household can attend and leave aligned on handling, storage, and safety.
