Why Waivers Are Required
At USS Academy, safety is not optional — it is the foundation of every class, every range session, and every interaction we have with our students. Our waiver and registration process exists to protect you, your fellow students, our instructors, and the facilities where we train.
Liability Protection
Firearms training involves inherent risks that must be acknowledged and understood before any student handles a weapon. Our liability waivers serve as a formal acknowledgment that you understand these risks and agree to follow all safety rules, range commands, and instructor directives.
Florida Legal Requirements
Under Florida Statutes Chapter 790, training academies must keep records of student participation, safety acknowledgments, and course completion. For CWP classes, accurate registration information is essential because your course completion certificate must match your government-issued identification exactly.
Insurance and Facility Compliance
Every range and training facility we use requires proof that all participants have signed appropriate liability waivers. Our general liability insurance mandates proper waiver documentation for every participant. Without a completed waiver on file, we cannot allow any individual onto the range — no exceptions.
Digital Record Keeping
USS Academy uses WaiverForever, a secure digital waiver platform, to collect and store all forms. Your information is encrypted, safely stored, and never shared with third parties for marketing. For full details, review our Privacy Policy.
What to Know Before Your Class
Complete Your Waiver in Advance
We strongly recommend completing your waiver at least 24 hours before your scheduled class. Walk-in waivers are available but can add 10–15 minutes to your check-in.
What to Bring
- Valid government-issued photo ID — Florida driver's license, state ID, passport, or military ID. Name must match your waiver exactly.
- Proof of payment — Confirmation email, voucher, or receipt.
- Eye and ear protection — Provided by USS Academy, but you may bring your own.
- Water and snacks — Some classes run several hours.
Dress Code
Closed-toe shoes mandatory. High-neck or crew neck shirt recommended (brass casings eject unpredictably). Hats with forward-facing brim recommended. No sandals, flip-flops, or open-toe footwear on any range.
Arrive on Time
Arrive at least 15 minutes early. Late arrivals may not be admitted and no refund will be issued. If running late, call 407-305-8335 immediately.
Firearms and Ammunition
You do not need to own a firearm. We provide rental firearms and ammunition for CWP classes and most courses. Personal firearms must be inspected by the instructor — arrive unloaded and cased. Never handle a firearm in the parking lot or common areas.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I need to sign a waiver?
Every class involving firearms requires a signed waiver — both a Florida legal requirement and insurance mandate. The waiver confirms you understand the risks, agree to follow safety rules, and provides information needed for your course completion certificate.
What are the age requirements?
CWP classes: 21+ (or 18 for active-duty military/veterans). General training: 18+. Minors 12+ may participate in supervised range activities with a parent/guardian present who has also signed the waiver.
Can I complete my waiver digitally?
Yes — all waivers are completed digitally through WaiverForever. Your digital signature is legally binding under the E-SIGN Act and UETA. You'll receive a confirmation email with a copy for your records.
When should I complete my waiver?
At least 24 hours before your class. You can fill it out on your phone when you arrive, but allow an extra 10–15 minutes. You cannot participate until your waiver is on file.
Which waiver do I need?
New CWP student: Class Registration & Welcome Packet. CWP exam: CWP Exam Registration. Range sessions/events: General Range Waiver. Unsure? Call 407-305-8335.
Are there medical considerations I should disclose?
If you have any medical condition that could affect your ability to safely handle a firearm — including seizure disorders, vision or hearing impairments, recent surgeries affecting grip or mobility, or medications that cause drowsiness — please disclose this on your waiver or notify your instructor before class begins. USS Academy instructors can make reasonable accommodations, but safety is non-negotiable. If you have questions about whether a condition affects your eligibility, call 407-305-8335 before enrolling.
What happens during the safety briefing?
Every USS Academy class begins with a mandatory safety briefing conducted by the lead instructor. The briefing covers the four universal firearm safety rules, range-specific rules for that facility, emergency procedures, cease-fire protocols, and proper handling of malfunctions. Students who cannot demonstrate adherence to safety rules may be removed from the class without refund. The safety briefing typically lasts 15-20 minutes and sets the tone for the entire training day.
What is the arrival procedure on training day?
Arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled class time. Check in at the registration table with your government-issued photo ID. Your instructor will verify your waiver is on file, confirm your identity, and issue any rental equipment. All personal firearms must arrive unloaded and cased — never handle a firearm in the parking lot or common areas. Once checked in, you will be directed to the classroom or range staging area for the safety briefing.
What Each Waiver Covers
Class Registration & Welcome Packet
This comprehensive form is required for all students enrolling in a CWP (Concealed Weapons Permit) course. It collects your personal information needed for your course completion certificate, your emergency contact details, a brief medical disclosure, acknowledgment of class policies including the cancellation and refund policy, and a liability waiver covering classroom and range activities. Your name on this form must match your government-issued ID exactly, as your completion certificate will be used for your Florida Department of Agriculture CWP application. This form also includes a photo release consent and agreement to follow all instructor directives and range safety rules.
CWP Exam Registration
Required before you sit for the concealed weapons permit examination. This form confirms your identity, verifies your eligibility under Florida law (age, residency, legal standing), collects your digital certificate delivery preference (email or printed), and includes a declaration that all information provided is accurate. Providing false information on this form may result in denial of your CWP application by the state. USS Academy verifies your identity against your government-issued photo ID before the exam begins.
General Range Waiver
This waiver is required for all range activities outside of structured courses, including private range sessions, Bullseye Benefactor membership sessions, special events, and group outings. It covers the inherent risks of live-fire activities, your agreement to follow all range safety rules and range officer commands, and a liability release for USS Academy and the host range facility. The General Range Waiver includes a section for minors aged 12 and older to participate under direct parent or guardian supervision — the parent or guardian must sign the waiver on behalf of the minor and remain present at all times during the range activity.
