The Gun Safety Class Every Owner Should Take
Safety is the foundation of responsible firearm ownership. USS Academy's gun safety class in Orlando is built for the gun owner who wants a real foundation — the handling, the storage, the legal framework, and the household awareness that keeps a firearm from becoming a liability. Over 27 years we have taught thousands of Orlando residents the safety fundamentals that prevent accidents and build confidence.
The class covers the four universal rules of firearm safety, safe handling techniques, secure storage options, transportation, and the legal and civil responsibility of owning a firearm in Florida. Every class is led by a certified instructor with operational experience — Law Enforcement Firearms Instructor credentials, U.S. Marine Corps, NRA, USCCA, and Florida Class K License backgrounds.
Safety Curriculum
The gun safety class is structured around the principle that every safety behavior must become automatic. If a safety rule requires thought in a crisis, it failed in training.
The Four Universal Rules
Treat every firearm as loaded. Never point at anything you do not intend to destroy. Keep finger off trigger until ready to fire. Know your target and what is beyond it.
Safe Handling
Loading, unloading, clearing, and verifying. Administrative handling vs live handling. Handling near other people.
Safe Storage
Gun safes, trigger locks, cable locks, ammunition storage, separate-storage principles, family-in-home considerations.
Transportation
Vehicle transport, open-carry vs concealed transport, travel between states, loaded vs unloaded in transit.
Legal & Civil Responsibility
Florida statutes on negligent discharge, child access prevention, and the civil liability that extends beyond criminal law.
Live-Fire Introduction
Optional range session with instructor-supervised live-fire for students who want to apply classroom concepts on the range.
New Owners, Families, and Everyone in Between
The gun safety class is designed for adults who own a firearm, are considering owning a firearm, or live in a household with a firearm. Many first-time gun owners take the class immediately after purchase. Many experienced shooters take the class years into ownership because they never had formal instruction. Families enroll together so the entire household understands the same rules.
If you are not yet a firearm owner but are thinking about it, the gun safety class is a useful step before purchase. If you own a firearm and have never had formal instruction, this class is a responsible upgrade to your household's safety posture.
The Foundation We Insist On Teaching Right
There is no shortage of casual safety tutorials online. USS Academy's gun safety class exists because a casual tutorial is not enough — safety training needs structure, accountability, and the hands-on reinforcement that only an in-person class provides.
- Certified instructors. LE Firearms Instructor, USMC, NRA, USCCA, Florida K License credentials.
- Hands-on handling. Every student gets direct instruction, not a video and a handout.
- Small class sizes. Capped enrollment so no student gets lost in the back of the room.
- Family-friendly. Spouses, partners, and family members are welcome to enroll together.
- Rental firearms available. Practice handling without needing to own yet.
- Foundation for everything else. The gun safety class feeds directly into our concealed carry, defensive, and advanced programs.
